Name: Mary Ricksen
Location: West Palm Beach, FL, United States

I moved to Florida in 1980. I was born in Vt., but it's cold sooo long, I'll settle for scenic North Carolina. I enjoy the change of seasons. Spring, summer, winter, and fall, all have such a unique flavor; here it's just too subtle. I loved to ride horses more than anything. My dog Junior is a character in my first book, and there will be more of my pets in my next book. We moved a lot when I was young, from Canada to New York, and from Texas, to Florida. I met all kinds of people, and I find that the more rural it is, the more friendly people are. I have been married for a long time. So long it's like he's my left hip. But I'll keep him, he can fix anything! I have a beautiful secret garden, with everything from Plumeria, to Penta. There is nothing better than sitting out there with a good book and seeing the palms and ferns wave in the breezes, in winter, the real time to be here in Florida. I have written and published my first book in a series that takes place on Lake Champlain in Vermont. My always home. The only thing like the Green Mountains are the Great Smokey's, and a little town called Bryson City, NC. My next home, hopefully!

Summer TV, I'd rather read a book!

Well here I am once again.
My DH and I are about to watch Hell's Kitchen. I am sure you have all heard of it or seen it. It's about a talented chef who has no ability to control his temper. He swears at his contestants, calls them names, and yells in their faces. Now that works for me.
Last night we watched some show about a neighborhood whose members are in a contest to win money. Last night they kicked out one of the neighborhoods best neighbors.
Or there is always Big Brother, where we can watch some spoiled, selfish, self centered people, learn how to perfect lies.
Have you seen any of the bachelor shows? I actually find myself feeling sorry for these fools.
One guy, twenty five girls, can these girls not do math?
The models are beating each other up. People are bouncing through obstacle courses that look potentially fatal to try and get through.
Now we don't have cable or a dish, I refuse to throw the money away. It's such a rip off. My DH put an antenna on the roof and we watch quite a number of free local channels. What makes me happy is looking at a tv guide and realizing I wouldn't watch any of the shows on cable if I could.
So tell me what else is there to do but read! Books never fail me, they take me away.
They teach me. They comfort me.
Give me a pleasant setting a good book and a pot of tea. Books are the best!

By the way I love this little faery! So cute!

I couldn't agree more, Mary. We don't have cable or Sky tv, in fact we rarely watch tv except for animal, countryside or wildlife programmes and I do love the occasional good film.

Reality shows leave me absolutely cold I'm afraid. I know a lot of people love them but for me they are a complete waste of time, from what I've heard of them, and I have no inclination to watch one to see if I'm wrong!

I'm a closet reality TV junkie. As a matter of fact the book due for one of my publishers is called Ineligible Bachelor - about a woman who sends in a picture of the guy next door and didn't read the fine print. He's the next contestant on "The World's Sexiest man." when he wins. Unfortunately the fine print also says she has to help pick out his date.

Maybe while watching TV, this could be the good book you read!!

Here's another amen. I hate reality TV!!! In fact, the non-reality TV doesn't impress me either. I can get a lot more done when TV isn't an option.
